Upskilling is the process of acquiring new skills or improving existing ones in order to increase one's knowledge, abilities, and prospects for career advancement. It entails obtaining the skills and knowledge required to keep up with changing market needs and be relevant in one's industry.

The demand for upskilling has increased by over 38% in the last year, according to a recent Udemy survey! That's a sizable number, which highlights the need for upskilling. The demand for skilled workers is greatly outpacing the supply in this era of technological boom.

Developing skills to execute tasks that are challenging to automate is one approach for the worker to overcome job losses brought on by technology and globalization. Appropriate competencies evolve with time. "Skills become obsolete over a few years since knowledge has a shorter half-life" (Sze-yeng & Hussain, 2010, p. 1913). To prosper in the labor market and stay relevant, it is especially important for "knowledge workers," or those whose tools are information and whose outputs are creative decisions, to pursue skill-training throughout their careers (Brynjolfsson, 2017).

Why we need ……. Upskilling

Companies could hire experts, but doing so is expensive. Retraining your current personnel is a better choice. Your employees' morale will increase as a result of upskilling them, which will help with employee retention. Moreover, hiring and onboarding expenses are reduced. Overall, the potential for the new HR trend of upskilling is enormous.

According to a World Economic Forum analysis, about half of all employees will require major upskilling by 2022 in order to remain competitive in the labor market. And the below important points they mentioned.

1.To stop the skills gap from growing, action is required

We need to invest in upskilling to reduce the skills gaps and increase trust between employers and employees, citizens and governments, and across broader society. This includes tech, environment, social, and governance, as well as soft skills such as leadership, resilience, and global acumen.

2.Job satisfaction may be influenced by skills.

A survey of 52,000 workers worldwide found that those with highly valued skills are significantly happier and more empowered than those without. They are also more likely to ask for a raise or promotion in the next 12 months and look for a new employer. Those with a potential skills gap have a less satisfying work life, are less likely to have a plan to advance their career, and are less engaged in learning new skills. Their employers are also less likely to provide access to upskilling opportunities

3.Skills for a better job as well as humanity.

Businesses can help combat polarization in a variety of ways, in addition to upskilling. Another area of emphasis should be on fostering an atmosphere where employees feel free to bring their humanity to work.

4.Delivering results that are sustained requires trust.

Organizations must manage a combination of factors to navigate the change in the world, including in-demand skills, meaningful work, and trust in their workforce. Employers who get this right will earn the trust of their workforce and deliver sustained outcomes for the business and society.

How to achieve this using a variety of HRM techniques to upskill their workforce. The examples below are only a few.

1.     Training and Development Programs –

Organizations can provide training and development programs that concentrate on acquiring the specialized knowledge and skills required for the success of the firm. These courses can be given in a variety of ways, including in-person instruction, online learning, coaching, and mentoring. Companies that engage in staff training and development outperform their rivals in terms of revenue growth and shareholder returns, according to a McKinsey study.

2.     Job Rotation -

Companies can use job rotation to offer staff members fresh perspectives and educational opportunities. Employees may need to be transferred to various organizational departments or employment positions to accomplish this. Job rotation, according to Harvard Business Review research, can boost workers' skills and job happiness, which can improve output and retention.

Conclusion,

Upskilling is intended to increase one's employability, job satisfaction, and prospects for professional growth. For people, companies, and society as a whole, keeping up with the rapidly changing technical and economic landscape is a crucial strategy.
